Dynamic Licensing Explained
l i c m a x ™ leverages on the concept of Dynamic Licensing widely adopted and facilitated by online app stores. The online app store issues an HTTP request for a license key to the URL listed for your application at point-of-sale. The licensing server behind the URL responds back with a license key. The online app store and/or the licensing server delivers the key to the buyer of the app via email. Your application instance verifies the validity of the license key according to the type of the key.
You get to specify the URL when you configure your product at the online app store. If you sell your app on your own using own site, you can program your site to issue the request for license key when your site receives the successful payment notification from the payment system you are using at your site.
Your application performs license key verification when it runs for the first time or according to how you designed it to. There are basically two types of verification methodologies.
- Online where the application issues a request to the licensing server it obtained the key from. The server responds back with an indicator of the validity of the key along with some extra information about the license key.
- Offline where the application verifies the validity of the key by performing an algorithm of some sort on the key. The outcome of the algorithm determines whether the key is valid or not. The application applies the same algorithm the licensing server used to generate the key. Various algorithms are usually available such as SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-512, MD5, etc.
