The online app store and/or the licensing server delivers the key to the buyer of the app via email. You get to specify the URL when you configure your product at the online app store. Your application performs license key verification when it runs for the first time or according to how you designed it to. There are basically two types of verification methodologies.
- Online where the application issues a request to the licensing server it obtained the key from. The server responds back with an indicator of the validity of the key along with some extra information about the license key.
- Offline where the application verifies the validity of the key by performing an algorithm of some sort on the key. The outcome of the algorithm determines whether the key is valid or not. The application applies the same algorithm the licensing server used to generate the key. Various algorithms are usually available such as SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-512, MD5, etc.
